All horse owners are familiar with this waxy, clumpy substance on the front (and occasionally back) of the cannon bones of the back legs. This proper term for this substance is called Cannon Keratosis, but better known in the horse community as “Cannon Crud”.
Cannon Keratosis is caused by excessive production of Keratin, which is the main structural component of hair and hooves. It becomes problematic when the excessive keratin exudes from the skin and dries. Although this is most commonly found on the back cannon bones, it CAN also be found on the face, ears and above the hocks.
This material can be difficult (if not impossible) to get off with routine brushing and bathing. However we have a simple solution!
- Apply Equiderma Skin Lotion to affected areas. Leave it on and let it soak in. No need to rinse off.
- The next day or two, shampoo the affected areas with Equiderma Neem Shampoo.
- Rinse and Dry and be amazed with how well the legs now look! It’s that easy!
*In more advanced cases, this treatment many need to be repeated 1-2 more times to remove the remaining bits of crud*
